Note: points refers to platinum contacts used in old petrol engines to energise spark plugs … basically a very reliable switch for high voltage at high frequency. This works in combination with time relay.
Now, think how it can be replaced with an semiconductor to have a solid state ? Power transistor ? mosfet ? IGBT ? SCR ?
Bear in mind, it was much easier for Kapanadze to get his hands on very basic things found almost everywhere at that time than getting a very specialised semiconductor. Also way easier than using rotary commutators as Tesla used +120 years ago.
